🎬 Movie Dex Guide — Narrow It Down by Genre and Era
The Movie Dex covers celebrated films, Korean and international, that left their mark on an era. This time the star isn't a person but a work. The charm of this dex is watching an entire film get distilled into two types and a handful of moves.
Five genre categories
Before you start, the Movie Dex sets its question pool across five categories — Action & Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Drama, Animation, Horror & Thriller, and Comedy & Romance. Turn on only the genres you actually watch and the difficulty drops noticeably. With the category hint on, you know the genre from the very first question — recommended until you've gotten comfortable with this dex.
Types are a movie's "temperature"
Movie Dex types capture the temperature of the impression a film leaves behind. Blazing cathartic action? Fire. A thriller that tightens around you with a chill? Ice or Ghost. A drama that soaks the heart? Water — that's the feel. Films that overwhelm through sheer scale, like monster or disaster movies, pair naturally with the Ground and Rock family. Check each type's texture in the Type Dex.
Invented move names compress iconic scenes
Movie Dex move names aren't real game moves — they were invented for this dex. The rule is simple: one modifier + one action. So the trick to reading them is simple too.
- Look at the action first. Does it chase, hide, or explode?
- Then let the modifier paint the scene. Where, with what, in what mood?
Move names always come from a film's most iconic scene or signature motif. If an "oh, THAT scene!" pops into your head, you've already got your answer.
The generation hint is the release era
The stage-2 generation hint lines up with when the film was released. Just sensing whether it's a beloved classic or a recent hit cuts your candidates by more than half. The greater the film, the more clearly people remember "what era it belongs to" — which makes the generation hint arguably the most valuable here of all five dexes.
In multiple choice, eliminate by genre instinct
When the final four options appear, cross out the works whose genre clashes with the type combination first. A comedy classic is never going to be the answer to a horror movie's type profile.
Overall hint management continues in Making Every Hint Count, and the story behind building the dexes continues in the Making-of Notes.
